When I was a student, we were encouraged to present our own ideas in a constructive way. Exploring a variety of viewpoints was great for creative minds, until everybody realised that it was indeed a double-edged sword. That is, if we came across a teacher with a different opinion, it didn’t quite matter how well the idea was presented.

Always on the lookout for something new and different, I attended this exhibition where participants re-invented the famous Gioconda. The results can be surprising. Take a look at some of the arworks below.

This is a not-for-profit project which aims at bringing art to everyone’s lives. The 181 participants from 51 countries must’ve certainly enjoyed re-imagining the famous Mona Lisa. Their creations are exhibited at the W3 Gallery in Acton, West London, and run by volunteers. I bet that Leonardo da Vinci would have been proud.

It is called The Gioconda Art Project. The organisers were only too happy for people to take pictures and instagram them, which is not that usual in British art galleries. I took the following pics with my mobile.

All of the artworks were exhibited in the ‘Big Mural’. Here are some of them.

Many works clearly presented the Mona Lisa in a sexual manner. But, there were other influences too, such as popular culture.

I believe that some artworks had a more religious feel to them.

Some of them must’ve taken a huge amount of work. This one looked like an embossed sculpture. Notice the detail of the muscles, hair and background.

Some more daring alternatives.

Thank you for reading my post. Hope you’ve enjoyed it!
