Fancy a Sweetie?
There is something that has caught my eye in London recently. It is the amount of old-style sweet shops that have sprung up everywhere. It´s almost like Tesco stores, but more attractive, little and often expensive stores.
When I was growing up, I would always be told that sweets where either for a treat or for a special occasion. I would not see that many grown-ups having sweets anyway. Biscuits and cakes were maybe the only exception, but adults would not eat them too often either.
My generation is seems to be different. As an example, when I started to work in London, I noticed tbat sweets and cakes would be brought in the office often, if not everyday. No complaints here. It does take me a little bit of will power to say no to all those little, nice things though. Then, I managed to learn how to bake some decent cookies, and that´s it – a lot of will power gone with that.
Some eating habits do make my parents´generation cringe. They are quite right in many ways. The problem, in my opinion, lies in that life has changed a bit. Everything is quicker now and we are more anxious than before. I think we need something that comfort us quickly too.
What if that comfort is brought on by something that reminds us of times past? I personally find charming all those sweet shops everywhere, as they have the power to bring me back to my childhood. It is almost as if we wanted to escape from our day-to-day for a little while to come back with more energy. Just a thought.
What is your favourite sweet?
Hope you have an exceedingly sweet weekend!
We loved London when we visited several years ago. Favorite sweet… dark chocolate covered pretzels.
Got to try that! Thanks for stopping by!
I am a lover of sweets! And one of my beliefs is that my stomach has a special compartment especially for dessert — not matter how big the meal was!
I know! How bad that is? Hahaha! I often feel that I have not finished a meal without a sweet.
